Trimble SPS986 GNSS Smart Antenna Receiver

The Trimble SPS986 is a rugged GNSS smart antenna designed for construction surveying and site positioning. It combines a satellite antenna, receiver, internal radio, attitude sensors, and battery in one portable unit. Construction professionals use it to determine positions and elevations for site measurements, layout, and grade checking.

The SPS986 supports real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning, using satellite observations together with correction data from a compatible base station or correction network. This enables precise measurements for tasks such as recording ground levels, checking excavation depths, and locating planned construction points. The accuracy available depends on the receiver configuration, correction source, and field conditions.

Depending on its enabled configuration, the SPS986 can operate as a rover, base station, or both. As a rover, it is typically mounted on a survey pole and moved around the site to collect measurements. As a base station, it supplies correction data to compatible receivers, providing a positioning reference for work across the project.

The receiver works with Trimble Siteworks or SCS900 Site Controller software, allowing crews to collect points and compare field measurements with project designs. An available dynamic tilt upgrade also supports suitable vehicle-based measurement workflows, helping users capture sloped surfaces and build terrain models while moving around a site.

In everyday use, the SPS986 helps supervisors, grade checkers, site engineers, and construction surveyors understand existing conditions and verify completed work. Its integrated design makes it practical to transport between jobsites and set up for different positioning tasks. Available capabilities depend on the unit’s installed options, firmware, and connected field equipment.
