Faro ION Laser Tracker 3D
The FARO ION Laser Tracker is a portable, high-precision 3D measurement system used to inspect large parts, machinery, tooling, and assemblies. It functions as a portable coordinate measuring machine, allowing technicians to measure equipment directly on a factory floor or at an installation site.
The ION directs a laser beam toward a precision reflective target called a spherically mounted retroreflector, or SMR. As the operator moves the target between measurement locations, the tracker follows it and combines distance and angle measurements to calculate its position in three-dimensional space. Measurement software displays these positions as X, Y, and Z coordinates.
For dimensional inspection, the collected coordinates help users evaluate distances, angles, surface geometry, and the positions of features. Compatible metrology software can compare measurements with engineering drawings or CAD models, helping manufacturers identify dimensional differences and document whether components meet their requirements.
The system also supports alignment and assembly work, including positioning large components, checking fixtures, and establishing reference locations for machinery. Technicians can use its measurements to guide adjustments during installation or production, helping reduce fitting problems and rework. Its portability makes it useful for objects that are difficult to transport to a dedicated inspection room.
The FARO ION includes an integrated weather station that monitors temperature, air pressure, and humidity to support accurate distance measurement. It requires a clear optical path to the target, appropriate setup, and compatible measurement software. When properly calibrated and maintained, its measurement results can be traced to recognized national and international standards.
